The UN Security Council voted in favour to an American proposal ending penalties on President Ahmed al-Sharaa of Syria prior to his Washington trip the coming week.

He was appointed provisional head of state subsequent to commanding a rebel offensive that ousted the former president in December 2024, bringing to a close 13 years of civil war.

Washington's ambassador Mike Waltz at the United Nations stated the United Nations delivered "a powerful diplomatic message" that affirmed Syria's transition into "a new era" after Assad's removal.

Sharaa was under global penalties as the leader of the religious organization HTS, previously associated with al-Qaeda. America delisted the group from its registry of foreign terror groups this past July.

Additional Sanctions Relief

The UN also removed sanctions on Syrian Interior Minister the interior minister.

The nation's top diplomat welcomed the removal of the sanctions, stating online: "Syria expresses its appreciation to the United States and supportive states for assisting the Syrian nation and citizens."

Forthcoming Presidential Visit

The Syrian leader's Washington trip on Monday occurs subsequent to US President Donald Trump said the Syrian leader had made "good progress" working toward stability to the previously divided state.

Subsequent to their talks, Trump remarked the Syrian leader had "a real shot to unify the country".

The pair met for the first time in May, while the American president was in Saudi Arabia while traveling through the region.

Subsequent to that discussion, Trump portrayed him as a "resilient figure" possessing a "powerful background".

His former militant faction was al-Qaeda's affiliate inside the country prior to breaking relations back in 2016.

Earlier American Trip

This week's diplomatic engagement is not Sharaa's first trip to the US in the current year. This past fall, he emerged as the pioneering Middle Eastern head of state to speak before the United Nations gathering in Manhattan after approximately sixty years.

Throughout his presentation, he stated the country had been "reclaiming its rightful place among the nations of the world" and demonstrated unity with the people of Gaza.
